Nic from Kent sent me some images of the diffuser I made for him - and a very nice job he's done on it... He mounted the gates at about 25% full width (by the look of it) from each side rather than the 33% I did and, I think the look of it is better - his car also looks a cracker!

Got a Sony 550 line zoom bullet camera and a rather impressive JXD PMP/Recorder thingy for Christmas. Had a quick blatt to test it out and the product is pretty dang good, will be even better on the Tri :-) No shake at all, you can actually see scenery now! The sound recording is very clear and this was just with the mic resting on the passenger seat. Still playing with various codecs/software to get the file size down to a reasonable amount for posting up.

All of this was using the mount I made up for the 'larger' video camera, (you can see it in the first set of pictures). A tad overkill :-) so had a look round for a bullet cam mount... and ended up with a Manfrotto 'Superclamp' - very nice. Even ordered it with (what I thought was) the correct spiggot thingy to mount the camera to the plate. Could it be that simple? Well no, it couldn't :-) Although the spec said it was for a 1/4" mount it only had that on one end, the other end was a 3/8th thread - all my fault - so I thought, just make a mount up from the bits we got with the bullet camera kit (the first set of pictures).

Drilled out one of the Superclamp spare mount holes and bolted the adjustable mount on... Just that it looks kind of flimsey, so ordered up a Cullmann  Ball & Socket Head mount with, again, a 1/4" fitting, all well and good, no! It only had a threaded stud on one end, damn it, so fine to attach to the camera but nothing to attach it to the Superclamp... Off I went to the local nut and bolt shop for a 1/4" UNC set screw, chopped and locked into the Superclamp and fits the camera with no worries. I am amazed at how difficult it was to order up a fitting that attaches a camera to a mount and then the mount to a clamp - and these were 'shops' that supplied bullet cams for sports, including motorsport!

Still, all done now. Well apart from sorting out the safety/security strap fittings for the cam...

Also ordered a battery pack for the recorder... Now will continuoiusly record for 17+ hours with the camera giving 12+ hours on it's Lithium Ion pack. Worked out, from the test recording, that each 1GB SD card will give about 1H20Mins of 640 x 480 video at 30fps and the onboard 2GB giving over 2.5hrs of recording - sounds fab, so just waiting for the sun to come out so we can use the thing :-)))

Sorted out the car insurance... Saved £40 by going with another provider - not bad at all and, on the face of it, it's a better policy to boot.

Decided the bullet cam needed a 'shoe' to help support it in the new Cullmann mount, so a high tech mould was made with some MDF, a length of placcy tube, a sandwich bag... and pour some epoxy resin in. The result is pretty good, just need to raise up the sides to reduce the arc length and job should be done, (the white thing in the images is the rudder - just waiting for a final W&D session to fair it off... hmmmm, hydrodynamics).

Belt sanded the shoe to size and it does the job perfectly... All sprayed up in silk finish black - very nice.

Finally - I think - sorted out the various video/sound codecs to allow a sensible file size Vs. quality to allow video from our new saucy camera system to be posted up... Here is a quick clip (1MBs worth, down from a total clip size of 250MB):

Well, it works fine on my system: Firefox + Media Player.... And just to confirm, the speed limits were all being observed and adhered to, as was all other laws to do with road safety/use, I was using the mirrors and indicators and everything (honest). The roads were reeeally greasy which, in this car, is a jolly good reason to be good - not that I'm not good all the time anyway.... Plus I've edited the vids frame rate so the apparent speed is not a true representation... and it wasn't me driving, in fact - was that even my car etc etc etc.

Oh dear, I really hate the Nanny State we live in that I have to vet a simple 'show off' of our new video system - it really is sad.

Just over the hill at the end of the video is a pole with four flippin cameras on it - gawd knows what they do. I'm not even going to mention all the suspicious 'new' chevron cuts in the tarmac all along this stretch of road. As a note... I actually saw a Police car today - Came as a bit of a shock, a Police car, moving with people (I assume they were indeed Police Officers) in it!

Anyway, quite pleased at the quality of the much cut down vid, the original (much longer) video is very, very impressive - found m'self 'leaning' into the corners :-) To be brutal, the camera system is probably going to get used much more on the boat than the car - No speed limits in open sea and it's a damn sight cheaper than the equivalent time on a trackday! Admittedly, you get 'slightly' wetter on the boat, but I feel it's a small price to pay.

Oil and filter change - Oh, the excitement!

MOT time, the car's all ready and booked in for Monday at 0730hrs.

..................Passed! :-) It was, however, one of the coldest drives ever... I had to have porridge when I got home.

Absolutely nothing on the car front this month I'm afraid... We have a mid April deadline to get the boat ready and launched, so all our efforts are directed at that goal... Got some good blatts coming up next month though.

Again, nothing much to report - the car is fine and working well... Now the boat, boy was that hard work, still it was launched on time, the new sails arrived on time and third sail out we broke the current speed record with a solid 16Kts, a full 0.9Kts fast than last year in much less wind, should be a fun summer!

Well, what to say? The summer was rubbish... Little by way of blatting I afraid, but here goes :-)

Looking at an RR1000 Blade engine swap... Could use a Garrett T'somethingorother and Megasquirt to run the extra injectors and indeed the water injection, so could sell my engine as a complete power unit (all the oil cooling, turbo, air system etc etc). Sounds like a plan, would give some extra HP (like the car needs any) but more importantly, I can fiddle and design and make 'stuff' again - and that can't be a bad idea! Things on the list would be:

  1. Engine (obviously - and check gearing...)
  2. Fueling for the turbo
  3. The Turbo and all its bits
  4. Manifold and link pipe work
  5. Electronics redo to suit the new engine
  6. Water injection control and a bigger tank
  7. Engine cradle
  8. Prop adapter/modification/replacement
  9. Cooling system rejig
  10. Oil cooler take-off plate and system rejig
  11. Airbox
  12. All the other stuff that would need doing and I haven't thought of....

So, might be worth a look........

Oh, by the way... as every other bugger is up'ing their prices, I've jumped on the band wagon too: The cost for all the GRP bits and the spring have gone up I'm afraid.
